Simple way of controling the audio. Have an external speaker connected and the volume/on/off control within reach. Mine is almost always off.

I hate the squeeks, pops and bells of a PC, I can tell when something is happening without a computer generated noise that harks back to the dawn of the computer age.

I’m sure we’ve all visited web pages where some ad in the corner starts up a video and you can’t stop it because other ads are getting in on the act too. Any regional news site in the UK works like this, courtesy of what used to be called Trinity Mirror. The fact that readers are massively turned off by this and don’t actually want to read about some latest ponzi scheme seems to be beyond them.

I keep forgetting there's a <<Comicon>> style gathering in Angoulême.

I always wanted to go to something like that but age, and a dread of dealing with comicbook nerds, always held me back.

Are they any better than the UK brand specific computer shows of yore? The Commodore Computer Show always springs to mind.

Each year I have this slight delusion that I want to go visit the comic festival in Angoulême until I happily find out that it's already over and I don't have to make the effort. Luckily I'll still manage to be unable to make it this weekend, so I have to get annoyed later at the Comic Barcelona

To be honest, I don't like internet videos at all. There are exceptions when I want to be lectured or actually learn how to do something, but generally I find them a waste of time. If there is a transcript, I will read the bit that interests me and move on..... in a fraction of the time. If there isn't, I move on.

The associated audio is almost always irritating to the nth degree, especially if 'enhanced' with 'music' or spurious 'amusing' sounds (the equivalent of 'comic sans' font; You DO know what I mean).

When I'm at work (in the office or WFH) I have to use google suite(*) including calendar - and regularly seem to miss meeting reminders. So I use Windows Alarm in parallel.

Now, I seem always to need the laptop volume set to 100% to hear what's said. Everything works great until I forget to plug the headphones in and walk away just before a meeting. And without the 'phones, the alarm makes an unholy racket audible across the entire office. Luckily my boss (seat next door in the office) knows that F2 is Mute even with screen locked.

(*) G-Suite calendar and meetings actually work quite well, unlike the word processor and spreadsheet whose only useful feature is the collaborative element. Sometimes I actually miss Micro$oft!

Please, no automatic audio, it would ruin my marriage

I often find myself scrolling through web pages whilst the wife is talking at me, auto sound would really give the game away

I remember one time my buddy and I went to McD’s for quarter-pounders, and we walked past the bright, spacious, clean location in the neighbourhood to go instead much further to the dingy, cramped, and grubby location downtown (where all the homeless congregate). I asked my buddy, “why do you prefer this one??” I was genuinely perplexed!

Replies he, “that other place is filled with SCREEMIN’ CHILDREN!!!”

(Yeah, he never had kids.)

We got your point-n-click barn sounds right here!

As a non-parent, I feel a particular debt of emotional gratitude when parents bring those tinny audiobook things on an aircraft. Particularly on long haul.

Opera (at least on Linux and Windows) has an option to mute the active tab (or mute all other tabs or ...)

This has been a life saver for me, and these days there are certain websites i only open after having made sure the tab has been muted . (Indeed, UK news sites sseems to delight in spamming you with noisy adds that bypass the bul in ad-blocker in some sort of ever spiralling arms race)

Clearly I'm a grumpy old man these days, as I found myself agreeing with all of this and enjoying some "proper" music which was very much grunge themed this week.

I saw Alice in Chains live in Glasgow on their last tour and would recommend them highly to anyone. I've rarely heard better live vocals or sound.
