As a 'repulican' (not in the American sense!) I loved the line, "as a committed republican, I think the idea of having a Queen is enormously silly but that the Queen that Britain actually ended up with for 70 years was worth all the silliness." I'm going to steal it and make a slight change before pass it off as my own words! As a committed republican, I think the idea of having a Queen is enormously silly. the Queen that Britain actually ended up with for 70 years was worth a bit of the silliness but none of the expense to the taxpayer! Thanks for another Friday afternoon musing Alistair :-)

A cerebosian "see how it reins" might be a useful alternative strapline for the coat of arms, usable in Scotland as well as England and Wales. As for the shape-shifting reptile, you know what Liz is short for and it's an almighty coincidence that there were two in the same room a couple of days ago but only one has been seen since.

As a committed anti-republican (I have a Vime-ish opinion of democracy as a whole - “Vimes had once discussed the Ephebian idea of ‘democracy’ with Carrot, and had been rather interested in the idea that everyone had a vote until he found out that while he, Vimes, would have a vote, there was no way in the rules that anyone could prevent Nobby Nobbs from having one as well. Vimes could see the flaw there straight away.” - TP) - I feel Presidents are all well and good for young countries that don't know any better. RIP QEII

Same as Dabbsy, not a royalist and thing is a very bizzare waste of cash on something that should of gone the way of the Dinos. But, what we had was not a bad person and she didn't ruffle feathers, but in reality will I miss her probably not, as day to day the monarchy as really not much to do with it and possibly Charles will be the last of the line and we make the break from it, but I guess it stops someway the likes of Tory clownes latest appointment from staying in position too long.

I find "committed Republicans " are folk who want to be president. I have the same attitude as hhgttg to folk like that.

Dabbsy, Howdy,

A lot of questions being asked by commentards and left unanswered on El Reg by El Reg re your passing. Care to set the SFTW record straight and arm the competition/opposition/frenemies?

So, Dabbsy saw those comments hypothesizing that he was let go of El Reg for being "too british", and decided to take that idea to 11, right?

Just found this article.

A while ago I came to the decision an elected leader will always have haters.

Boris and Blair mentioned, urghh take them away.

We need a random method of choosing leaders, currently by birth, but an alternative is random name drawn from a hat.

"This year it is you Dabbsy" as an example.

Wanting to be leader should be an automatic bar.
